Together against discrimination

defile 19 02Last Sunday, on the occasion of Ayacucho's Carnaval, well-known in the country, a big step has been done in the recognition of handicapped people in Huamanga. Four local organisations

fighting for the rights of this silent minority (Kuskanchik, el Omapedh, el Conadis and Los Gorriones) have paraded together in the streets of Ayacucho to make them heard. About twenty volunteers came along, acompanying a float decorated with messages belying some of the most spread prejudices about disabled people.

In Peru, like in many other countries in the world, disabled people are still suffering of discrimination, either to find a job, to have access to education or health care.

For los Gorriones, it was very important to participate in that event, in order to affirm our support to this cause which deeply concern us, being the only Casa Hogar in Ayacucho taking care of children with disabilities. We hope that that collaboration is just a first step, and that that event will contribute to change the way the population feel about the handicap.
